House Bill 5 in the current Texas legislature will raise cigarette taxes from $0.41 per pack to $1.41 per pack. The tax on snuff, pipe tobacco, and RYO cigarette tobacco will increase from 35.213% to 40%. There will not be an increase in cigar tax. Texas currently has only 1.1 cents per cigar as tax (large cigars) and 0.1 cents per cigarillo size. The bill was passed by the House on 4/27 and is now in the state Senate. If signed by the governor, the taxes will go into effect on January 1, 2007.
